Ministry Update

On Sunday, July 30th, The Xena Team presented a ministry update to our primary partners, Simonton Community Church, who blessed The Xena Project with covenant partnership in 2017.

If you were there, thank you for attending!  If you missed it, please see updates below, shared in flyer format with members of the Simonton Community.  Click the link for a pdf to share:

SCC Ministry Update July 2017

The Xena Project is a 501(c)3 organization founded and run by veterans. We facilitate mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing for warriors and their families in both group and individual formats, in a safe, tranquil environment rooted in nature. In addition to the ministry that is our foundation, we offer animal encounters, counseling (peer-led, pastoral, licensed professional), and family reunification programs.

The Xena Project is focused on breaking down barriers that keep warriors from a vibrant relationship with our loving God, and bringing men, women, and families into the peace of Christ. In practice, this means that our programs are free, and we challenge ourselves daily to become maximally accessible. It means Bible studies that talk about violence, fear, guilt, lack of faith, anger, depression, and addiction. It means meeting veterans where they are, whether isolated in their own homes, struggling with addiction, in or newly out of jail, or falling through the cracks of daily life.

Since becoming a Covenant Partner of Simonton Community Church, The Xena Project has touched more than 300 veterans and family members. More than a third are new to The Xena Project; more than a quarter are veterans of Vietnam. The ministry is:

  • Now open to law enforcement and first responders, by request. We believe that warrior hearts are similar in spirit, and that all reap spiritual benefit from integration.
  • Holding warrior-focused Bible studies. The first six-week series, held at SCC in May/June, grew from one to 12 attendees over the course of study. The Xena Project is offering the ReBoot Christian Ministries program, a Bible study focused on veterans working through traumatic experiences, beginning the second week in September; this 12-week course is the first of its kind offered in this area. The Xena Project has also been selected from ministries throughout the country to pilot ReBoot Bible studies for law enforcement later in the year.
  • Launching parenting classes for warriors with fellow covenant partner Family Hope beginning in September. In addition to basic instruction, these 10-week courses help families work through challenges such as trauma in the home, a parent recovering from trauma or addiction, absent parents due to deployment/work, divorce, and similar.
  • Taking The Xena Project to homebound veterans, including nursing homes, in our community. We will bring the Word of God, Godly people, and animals to those who cannot come to us beginning this fall. Volunteers needed!
  • Training others. We teach bi-monthly to peace officers through the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, with a focus on de-escalating situations involving veterans in crisis; we begin teaching to law enforcement in Baytown in August. We received our first request for pastoral support from a pastor in Austin this month, referred by word of mouth, seeking help reaching veterans in his congregation.
  • Creating a virtual ministry that will make multi-media materials available to those not yet willing, or not able, to come to programs in person. At present, we are overhauling our website. Volunteers needed!
  • Planning a retreat March 25 – 30, 2018. Our first retreat, held in October 2016 in the hill country, created an intensive 3-day experience for approximately 75 veterans struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The program, entitled “Who Are You?,” was designed by our own Pastor Bill Hogan. More to follow on plans for the second retreat.
  • Offering individual support when God places veterans in our path, which recently meant getting an Iraq veteran/Silver Star recipient off the streets, coming to the aid of an Afghanistan veteran having flashbacks in Bush airport, and teaching a Buddhist veteran about Jesus at his request.

Thank you for growing The Xena Project’s ministry. You are changing lives. You are saving lives.
